The Netherlands is divided in twelve provinces. Each province has her own identity and customs. One of the twelve provinces is bit more extreme than the other provinces. Friesland in Dutch and Frisia in English. As a native of the province of Drenthe, I had been living in Friesland for four years, and I am fascinated by how often people here talk about Frisian pride. Research also shows that the Frisians are the most proud of their province, people and culture - but what exactly is that pride, and how does it show itself? With these questions in mind, I set out to explore the, for me, unknown Frisian pride.

By engaging in conversations with the Frisians, I investigated what being Frisian means to them and what makes them proud. Using these conversations as inspiration, I traveled through Friesland to visually represent the pride they described.

Frysk en Frij is a visual exploration of Frisian pride, aimed at showing non-Frisians what it feels like to be proud of your province and your people.
